RESULTS: ASUS 2010 MSSA Free State LAN Championships
Written by Ryan van den Bergh
Saturday, 12 June 2010 16:02
With carguards waving us into the parking lot on a very fresh Saturday morning, we arrived at the venue in Bloemfontein for the ASUS 2010 MSSA Free State LAN Championships that were held on the 5th and 6th of June 2010.

The hall was abuzz with gamers, many of whom were attending their first LAN ever.

Immediately we noticed the helpfulness of the gamers in Bloemfontein as the older more experienced gamers sat down with the first-timers and helped them to set up their machines.

Under Frans Brewis’ commanding presence, the show got on the road and the gamers settled down for the first day of competition.

The first day of competition saw GUITAR HERO, CALL OF DUTY 4, and WARCRAFT III being played.

Guitar Hero

By now everyone should know that the GUITAR HERO competition at the ASUS sponsored MSSA provincial LAN championships are qualifying rounds for the WORLD CYBER GAMES (WCG). SAMSUNG is the sponsor of this part of the competition and has undertaken to bring up the top two players from each and every provincial championship to play in the Qualifying Finals to be held in Sandton on 7 August 2010. MEGAROM also sponsored the event through the loaning of equipment to ensure that the event was a success.

After a fiercely contested championship, the following players emerged as the medal earners:

COD 4

Even though the MSSA had received 18 entries, due to some last minute cancellations and the inability, no matter how hard everyone tried, to get some of the younger gamers machines ready, only 14 teams actually could take part.

What was really exciting was that there were learners from five different schools who participated in this event.

ESWAT’s main team dominated the event from start to finish, and even without having Frans Brewis to captain them, still managed to win all their games to not only win the event, but to also earn a re-award of provincial colours.

The results were:

WARCRAFT III

The WarCraft III section is growing in leaps and bounds. With every entrant aware that the MSSA will be sending a team of two players to the 2010 IeSF Grand Final in South Korea in September 2010, gamers are eager to qualify for trials in order to earn a place in the team.

The trip to the 2010 IeSF Grand Challenge has all accommodation and travel paid for.

Not unexpectedly the competition was fiercely contested by all the participants who knew exactly what they were playing for - a place in the National Team Trials, and a chance to earn Protea Colours!

Mornĕ Naude rose to the occasion. Mornĕ simply demolished all of his competition and thereby won the championship and earned himself Provincial Colours in the process.

Gaming resumed on Sunday at 9H00.

The games that were played on the Sunday were COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6, DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS (DotA), and FIFA.

Again, the MSSA officials were pleasantly surprised by the number of learners that attended the event. Not only that, but gamers came from as far away as Kuruman, Kimberley and Pretoria to participate in the event.

COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6

The CounterStrike 1.6 event had five teams participate which meant that the event was played to a round-robin system in which each team, played against every other team.

The team “Eternal Conflict” immediately stamped their authority on the championship. However, “Prisoners with Girlfriends”, and what nice girlfriends, were not going to let “Eternal Conflict” have it all their own way.

When the two teams were drawn against each other, it was clear that this was going to be the match that would decide the Championship. “Eternal Conflict” proved to be just to strong, and thoroughly trounced the would-be challengers to ensure their position as the Free State Champions and to earn Provincial Colours by winning all their games.

The final results are:

COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6 - PREMIER

DotA

The tried and tested DotA was also played in Bloemfontein.

The team “GHOST” immediately took charge and dominated the event. Not since SK Gaming attended the 2008 African Continental Championships in Johannesburg (hosted by the MSSA) did anyone see such a display of skill.

“GHOST” were thus rightfully crowned as the Free State Champions and were also duly awarded Provincial Colours for having won all their games.

The final results are:

FIFA 10

With a healthy entry for EA’s title FIFA 10, the Free State Championship was guaranteed of some firce competition. However, once the gamers discovered that their was a trip on the line to South Korea to the 2010 IeSF Grand Final, the knives were drawn. Every competitor gave it all that they could in order to win a spot in the National Team Trials.

PROVINCIAL COLOURS

It is always satisfying to award provincial colours to deserving gamers. The colours are not awarded lightly and are awarded only when gamers meet the following criteria, and are always awarded on residency:
  • Win all of their games at a Provincial Championships, and/or
  • Finish in the top 20% of gamers at both a Provincial and National LAN Championships.
It therefore gives me great pleasure to announce that the following gamers have earned their Senior Provincial Colours at the Free State Championships:
